0403 Earthquake Reconstruction Donation for NDHU
Due to the impact of the 0403 earthquake, NDHU reported a fire alarm at the 1st Building of College of Science and Engineering to the fire department at 8:04 AM on April 3rd. The fire was initially caused by a circuit system malfunction, which subsequently spread to the chemical laboratory. Due to the inability to extinguish chemical fires with water, the firefighting operation took a considerable amount of time, waiting for the chemicals to burn out. Environmental air perimeter testing conducted by the Environmental Protection Bureau showed no abnormalities.
The fire has been extinguished at 6:30 AM on April 4th, and the firefighters have confirmed that there is no risk of reignition. There were no casualties or injuries, and the damage was contained to the section D of the 1st Building of College of Science and Engineering, without affecting other buildings.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused to nearby towns due to the air quality impact of the fire.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the firefighters, Environmental Protection Bureau, Hualien County Government, Northern Taiwan Center of Consultation on Response to Disasters Caused by Hazardous Chemical Materials, Ministry of Education, Vice President Xiao Meiqin, Minister of the Interior, and the lawmaker Chen Peiyu for their assistance and concern.
Currently, we are assessing financial losses and proceeding with recovery and reconstruction efforts.

Founding President Mou Tsung-Tsan and Honorary President Chao Han-Chieh were the first to donate to assist with the earthquake disaster
Due to the impact of the 0403 earthquake, a fire broke out on April 3rd in the laboratories on the fourth floor of the 1st Building of College of Science and Engineering at National Dong Hwa University (NDHU). There were no casualties, but the Section D of the 1st Building of College of Science and Engineering suffered severe damage. Whether the building will be rebuilt or repaired depends on further assessment by professionals.
The initial estimate of property damage is approximately NT$500 million, and the losses of valuable laboratory equipment need to be assessed separately.
The founding President Dr. Mou Tsung-Tsan and Honorary President Dr. Chao Han-Chieh generously donated NT$200,000 and NT$100,000 respectively. The other two former presidents Dr. Huang Wen-Shu and Dr. Wu Mao-Kun also expressed their intention to donate. Many alumni and friends who care about National Dong Hwa University expressed their willingness to donate from their retirement pensions or monthly salaries to help rebuild the College of Science and Engineering.
Every donation counts, whether it's NT$100 or NT$10,000. Through this donation campaign, we want everyone to know that Dong Hwa people, like "roses that won't be flattened," can take root and sprout from under the marble, breaking through the soil, and never forget their alma mater.
With the support from all sectors, we believe that each donation will become a seed of hope, allowing NDHU to thrive once again.
